Gorge Creek Salt Marsh

The Gorge Creek salt marsh is a rare and ecologically rich brackish ecosystem that we are working to restore and protect.

Pollinator Meadow

The Pollinator Meadow boosts insect biodiversity by attracting native species to Esquimalt Gorge Park.

Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest is the woodland East of the Nature House that hosts many restoration projects to support wildlife and forest health.

Eelgrass Survey

Since 2022, we have conducted a yearly eelgrass survey to keep a record of changes to the habitat.

Indigenous Stewardship Site

The Indigenous Nature Interpreter Stewardship Site is designed as a place for the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations to gather, engage with, and learn about culturally significant plants.

6-PPDQ Monitoring

In collaboration with the BC Conservation Foundation and Vancouver Island University, we have been monitoring Gorge Creek for 6-PPDQ: a toxin from tires that can be fatal to salmonids.

Amphibian Monitoring

Amphibians are often used as indicator species because many are susceptible to contamination and changes in their environment, and have limited ability to migrate large distances.

European Green Crab Monitoring

With the DFO, we have been monitoring for the presence of invasive European green crabs in the Gorge Waterway.

Restoration Site Map

Created by one of our talented Restoration Technicians, Maddy Hopkins, the map shows the sites where GWAS conducts weekly restoration. These restoration sessions on Thursdays from 9:30-11 am are open to volunteers. Click on the polygons in the map below to learn more about our projects!
