OUR PROGRAMS
NATURE INTERPRETER PROGRAM

Our Nature Interpreters provide creative, interactive, and educational science communication in-person at the Gorge Waterway Nature House, out in the community, and online. At GWAS, we believe that high-quality, inclusive nature interpretation can cultivate greater appreciation for and stronger relationships with the natural world. Bring your family, your club, or your class to the Gorge Waterway Nature House to join us in lifelong learning.
CLIMATE INTERPRETER PROGRAM

Our Climate Interpreter Program is dedicated to educating and raising awareness about the importance of climate change and its impacts on our environment, globally and right here in the Gorge Waterway community. We aim to create the climate stewards of tomorrow by sharing climate solutions with the 4500+ Nature House visitors we welcome each year and facilitate avenues for meaningful climate action. Join us in our mission to create a sustainable future for generations to come.
INDIGENOUS YOUTH PROGRAM
We host an Indigenous Youth Program in partnership with the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. This program is designed to empower Indigenous youth, provide them with meaningful work experience as Indigenous Nature Interpreters, and give them the necessary tools and resources to succeed. We are committed to supporting the growth and development of Indigenous youth in our community.
RESTORATION PROGRAM

Restoration of ecosystems around Esquimalt Gorge Park, and throughout the Gorge watershed, is one of the core tenets of GWAS, and our team of Restoration Technicians and dedicated volunteers make it all possible. You can find us removing introduced vegetative species in Sherwood forest, planting native, brackish-tolerant plants in the salt marsh, and leading restoration work parties for the community. The more the merrier when it comes to restoration work, so reach out if you’d like to join our drop-in work parties in the summer, or for news on restoration events in the off-season.
BIOLOGY PROGRAM
Our GWAS Biologists undertake a wide variety of biological monitoring projects in Esquimalt Gorge Park and beyond. From eelgrass and oysters to chemicals and crabs to birds and bees, these surveys provide us with invaluable data regarding the health of the ecosystem and the effects of our restoration efforts. Reach out to help us keep an eye on the flora and fauna around us or to arrange a workshop for your class or club.
