Eelgrass Survey

Since 2022, we have conducted a yearly eelgrass survey to keep a record of changes to the habitat.

Eelgrass is an important foundational species that supports much of the Gorge estuarine ecosystem. It creates habitat for salmon, herring, feeder fish, crustaceans, and many other species. The leaves shed and provide food for decomposers. These creatures support predators like birds. Our eelgrass survey complements other, more in-depth surveys done in the Gorge less frequently. We aim to fill in the gaps from year to year to monitor for big changes. We visit 13 sites along the Gorge and estimate density and cover while looking for spots where algae or pollution may be causing damage.
